Hello, I have a new canon M50 camera and regardless of my selection to save images as RAW or CRAW with or without accompanying JPEG, the file type being created is .cr3. To my knowledge .cr3 is the new compressed and lossy iteration available on canon cameras. As I wish to take, save, and work with the lossless RAW format my question is how do I get the .raw file type on the camera, ideally with an accompanying JPEG for faster image review. Thanks, Justin
(asuming you are in standard menus not guided) if you hit the Q/set button on the round D pad then scroll down to the image quality box then hit info to select the raw does that not work? alternatively use menu then (red 1) for image quality and use the wheel around the shutter button to select raw. i just use jpeg on mine, i dont have the raw software and i prefer to shoot jpeg for max buffer/files
Hello Justin and welcome to the forum. I maybe missunderstanding your question. I am shooting stills only, but I am saving a RAW and JPEG file on the card with each image. The .CR3 file is roughly coming in at 28,000kb, and the same image that is saved as a JPEG is 5,500kb give or take a little. So the .CR3 file is not compressed. The .CR3 file is the RAW file. You are going to need a RAW converter to open this file. I hope that this helps. Gary
Thanks for the great reply's. apparently I misread an article when researching and I found the following explanation on another site which affirms your explanation. "A CR3 file is an image created by select Canon digital cameras, such as the EOS M50 and EOS R. It may store uncompressed RAW image data exactly how it was captured by the CCD or compressed RAW (C-RAW) image data depending on the camera setting selected. CR3 files were introduced in 2018 with the release of the Canon EOS M50, replacing .CR2 files." I had assumed compressed C-RAW would show as .CR3 for Compressed RAW 3 with regular uncompressed images having a different file extension but I was incorrect. Thanks again for the help!
