Last week I scored a Canon 50D for 10 dollars but the front control wheel does not change the shutter speed but I can change it in the quick control menu using the toggle. I downloaded the latest software upgrade for the camera but no change. There is no damage to the camera and the wheel rotates freely and clicks. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Congratulations on that great score. As for your controls, I would first go to the menu and scroll to the CFn page and hit Clear All Custom Functions and start afresh according to your set-up needs. That would be the second from the right icon at the very top row of icons. Good luck I hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice but that was one of the first things I tried and went into the menu and tried again after reading your post, I can still use the camera but it is a pain having to use the quick set menu, I might have to invest in a service for it.

At the price you paid for it a service would be a good investment. I hope that will fix the problem. I wish you luck.

Thank Ray, I now have to locate a camera shop that handles it.

Well Craig, I dug out my 50d and tried to replicate your problem. Since mine is in good working order I could not. The only way was to select aperture priority and I could not change the shutter speed but as normal it changes the aperture. Hmmm...good luck.Try spinning the Mode Dial a few times perhaps there is some dust/debris/oily film you may dislodge it from the contacts.

The more I play with the camera, the more I am convinced there is a dry joint in the soldered components or a crack in one of the digital board in the camera. I have viewed some videos on taking a 60D apart which is very similar so I might get a bit adventurous and take the top off and have a quick look, it may be something obvious and simple.

That sounds like a reasonable diagnosis of the situation. I wish you luck, Craig, and hope you are able to fix it yourself.

The 50d is a great camera, I still have mine, how are you coming along with the fix?

It has been put on the back-burner for the time being till I have finished building my darkroom under my house and getting the relevant equipment . I have most of it, as for the camera I have a 60D to use and a heap of other cameras. Still by the end of the year I should have the time and finances to get it fixed.

Depending on what kind of wheel it is, You could try to spray some "contact" cleaner in it and spin it a bunch of times. It could just be slightly dirty/corroded. But great buy at $10!

Well, I wish you luck because that is a great camera and a steal of a find.

I did not think of that so I shall buy some and give it a try, Hopefully it will work, could save me a service fee.
