    Hi Craig,
My 1Ds is much older than your 1D MK III (2002-2004 vs 2007-2009). I know it is full frame (Canon's first) versus your APS-H sensor camera but I expect that your camera would be worth more than mine. EOS-1Ds models seem to be selling around $300-$500 whereas your model is going for $1000 upwards. Maybe you were thinking that mine was a much more recent model.
Like me, it is very old but, despite its age, it takes quite good images with RAW files that don't need too much processing to look as good as those from much later models.

    More details here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EOS-1Ds
    and here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EOS-1D_Mark_III

It took me nine months to save up the 500 dollars my 1D mark 3 cost and nearly 12 months for the 500 dollars, I paid for my 60D, a crop c sensor camera but both these cameras suit what I do. It will be quite a few years before I invest in anything so expensive. The thing I like most about the 1D mark3 is for landscape shots unlike the 60D which I purchase first, there is no crop factor to worry about, still I like both cameras. My other cameras and lenses come from Vinnies as I handle all the camera gear for them these were cheap as well as all my darkroom gear except for a colour enlarger I purchase off of EBAY.

Such dedicated saving makes you appreciate your gear much more. With care they should last you for quite a while.
I never expected to be a Canon owner but one of my neighbours who used to be a press photographer moved away and needed to downsize and very kindly gave me two older Canon bodies - a 1Ds and a 20D. I then purchased two kit lenses and a larger zoom lens that fitted both of them and set out to learn how to use Canons.
So far, these two rather ancient Canons are impressing me and I value them and look after them carefully.

I was not always like that, I was a Indentured Fitter and Turner by trade and in 2007 I become sick and since then have been unable to work and stuck on a crappy government pension. On the bright side I had a lot more free time and indulged in photography. Wanting to learn more I turned to you tube. I now teach a photography class at the local Community center which has been going for about 5 or more years. What I do like about the cameras I have and use is being able to put old film lenses on them and get some nice results.Volunteering at Vinnies also allows me access to a lot of camera gear that comes in.

I am sorry to hear about your problems, Craig, but glad to see that you are not letting it get you down.
YouTube is a great resource and I have learnt a lot from watching many of the videos there. There are lots of people selling photography related video courses but there is not much that you can't find on YouTube for free.
I have bought adapters that allow me to use my old screw mount Takumar lenses on my Canons. I particularly like being able to use the old lenses on the full frame 1Ds at their nominated focal length without a crop factor.

I share your sentiment in this as well I also have a few film cameras which I have M42 adapters. My present favorite is a Royette 135mm lens on a canon AV 35mm film camera and have just purchased from Vinnies a Nikkormat 35 mm camera with a M42 to Nikon adapter on order at Ebay. It should be fun using my M42 lenses with the only drawback the light meter on the camera doesn't work so I will be using a hand held meter or the sunny 16 rules. By Christmas I should have my darkroom under my house finished. As you can see no time to let things get me down.

Hey, the old Nikkormat is a classic. You should have some fun with that one. It doesn't matter if the light meter isn't working. You have the solution - a hand held meter or the Sunny f16 rule.
I wish you well with your DR build. I am strictly digital nowadays. :)

    Hi Craig,
As you know, darkroom use has declined rapidly and you are in the right place to acquire the gear that would be hard to sell. I can guarantee that you will have fun. I always got a thrill when I took a roll of film out of the tank after developing. And then when you convert your own negatives into a print there is another level of excitement and satisfaction. I never went beyond doing B&W as colour work is very time and temperature critical. If you intend doing B&W developing I would recommend trying Rodinal developer http://www.adox.de/Photo/adox-film-developer/rodinal-adonal/.
You only use a small amount for each roll of film and the concentrate lasts for ages. And it increases sharpness and acutance.
    Have fun.

Thanks Ray, as soon as I get a few other jobs out of the way I can concentrate on the dark room. I have down loaded a heap of info on YouTube and believe it or not there are still a lot of people around who used to work in or regally use darkroom gear and most are regular Vinnies customers. One of the customers used to teach the subject at a college before he retired.

From a car to a darkroom in one thread.

Just to chip in on the darkroom part. I will be very interested in how you progress with this Craig. It is on my ever growing to do list. I am keeping an eye out for dark room materials, but so far, no luck.

Once you get up and running, any chance of keeping us all up to date with your progress?

Sorry Ray, not meaning to hijack your thread with another subject.

    Gary

Not a problem but it will most likely be at the end of the Christmas holidays. when I have made some reasonable progress I will post some photos so you can see how it is traveling

No problem, Gary. A darkroom is not on my to-do list but I will happily support others who want to go in that direction as it is a very satisfying pursuit.

Gary, this is a snap shot of some of the gear I have collected. Most have come from Vinnies, The Recycle shop and EBAY. Left to right photographic paper, a contact sheet printer, various magnifying units and the colour enlarger. You will note all the stuff in the kitchen. I don't have a wife to rain holy terror on me for making a mess and not cleaning up imediately.
