    Hi all once again,

I hope someone may be able to help with this this simple question for you experienced guys.

Do you know if the Sigma 150-600 mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Canon Mount Lens. will fit on the Canon EOS 4000D. I want to make sure before I spend nearly £800.00 on it. Well I can always return it, but I would lie to know before I get it and end up disappointed because it doesn't. I so what do you think of the lens?

    Thanks all.

    Pete

Yes it will fit your Canon body or any canon for that matter DG is sigma for EF mount. You can get crop lenses (EF-s mount) for you camera as well but those only work on crap sensor cameras so if you upgrade bodies later that could be something to think about.

Can you rent or borrow one from somewhere? It's probably your best bet if you need al that zoom range, so it may be a good purchase for you. Do you plan to shoot wildlife with it, that is kinda in the wheelhouse of what I would imagine the use is. It really isn't that fast of a lens so it will suffer a bit at sports. I do like it has image stabilization. But as far as a long zoom goes it is at the cheaper end as far as performance and price, but that said your shooting a canon rebel so you not exactly investing in high end gear. A variable aperture zoom 4.5-6.3 for example allows them to manufacture the lens cheaper, has more moving parts, and is harder to weather seal. Of course getting away from this lenses double in price or more quickly.

What do you shoot? Do you have other lenses? I'm not sure your shooting habits but targeting a number of lenses to your needs will give you more options and will perform better than trying to find a one single lens(think of it like this a 20 buck Swiss army knife can handle a bunch of tasks, but isn't superb at any of them). I do ask because 150 is actually a bit long for general use, and you will likely want wider. I just want to have a clear picture of how it fits into your kit.

Hi Johnsey, Thanks for replying. The lens in question would be used for wildlife. I currently have a conon EFS 18-55mm kit lens supplied with the camera. A Sigma DG 70-300mm telephoto macro and a Canon EFS 10-18Mmm wide angle lens. Am just looking for something that will get me that bit closer with good results.

    Thanks, pete

Well you could pick up a teleconverter to multiply the reach of your 70-300 that would be another option and cheaper.

I have a Sigma 150-500mm lens that I use on my Pentax APS-C bodies and I would have no hesitation in recommending the Sigma 150-60mm and I have recommended it to others. Yes, it will fit on your 400D and with Canon's 1.6 crop factor will give you 960mm at the long end which would be just wonderful for wildlife photography.
Go ahead and buy it with confidence.

A tele-converter is a good idea as it does not take up much room and as Jounsey said it will double the focal length of your 70-300, this will give you a focal length of 224 to 960mm taking into consideration that you have a crop C sensor camera and will be usable on your other lenses but you will loose two stops of light using one.
You can compensate this by adjusting your ISO or shutter speed.

Hi guys, Thank you all for replying. The woman of the house has discovered my intensions and is Not happy. Anyway we have reached a compromise, we'll she happy. I have now set my sights on a Used Sigma 150-500mm f5-6.3 DG OS HSM. The lens is a refurbished item and only £450. It's from a reputable company wex. com. And am able to return if not satisfied. So here's hoping. And maybe later get a teleconverter, but keep that quiet, lol. What do you think of that lens good purchase or bad?

    Thanks, Pete.

I think that is still a good purchase. On your 400D that gives you 800mm (500 X 1.6) at the long end and that is very useful.
    Go for it!!

I think you will like that purchase Pete, I believe the 50-500 is also APO an SLD which in short means better glass, it should be a step above the 600 in sharpness and color performance.

Small clarification on the reach of the zoom: the 500 will still be a 500 on either a crop or full frame camera when you use it a tree in the distance will not be magnified more on one camera over another. What you actually have with a crop sensor is a small sensor only seeing 2/3 the glass in the center, so it is essentially a cropped in version of what the lens would see if you put it on a 5d. It gives the effect of what the 800mm would display on a full frame.

I used to have this lens, and cant recall having this problem.
I have a 100-300 f4 HSM lens currently and it only makes motor noise when trying to focus or shifting focus from one position to the next.

    Hi Pete,

I’m wondering if you could tell me, does the lens’ autofocus work with the Canon 4000D? I’m looking at getting this lens too but few of the reviews are suggesting the AF won’t work on the 4000D. Like you, I didn’t want to spend the money without knowing! Wondering if you could help me?

    Cheers,
    Keith

    Hi Keith,
I have up graded now I'm using a Canon Eos 77D and for wildlife a Tamron 150-600mm.
But whilst I was using the sigma 150 - 500mm there were no problems at all everything worked fine.

    Pete.

Yes, I didn't want or need the ear ache from the lady of the house so I asked a few questions around and the sigma 150-500mm was the winner. As it was cheaper being a second hand lens.

i do keep hearing people say the sigma zooms af don't work with canon and i don't understand why, i have the sigma 100-400 and the af works fine, even with the canon x2 teleconverter

I've seen posts online several years back regarding issues with the 150-600, but it affected a number of users on different bodies as well as Nikon users reporting issues, they may have had some bad batches. What was concerning was reading people had sent theirs in for service more than once.
