Carpenter Bee

I’m used to finding the odd honey bee that camps out on a flower overnight but this is only the second time I’ve run across one of these.

Lot's of practice, observation, and being at the right place at the right time. This shot was taken early on a cool morning. I had the luxury of setting up the tripod rig. It’s always a risk doing this. Does one go in for the handheld flash illuminated photograph good for a few shots or does one gamble setting up the rig in the hopes of getting some natural light shots. The bee was in the shade so I suspected it would be a while before it gathered enough warmth to fly off. The gamble paid off as it took close to two hours for the bee to stir. Lighting was such that I still had to augment the shot with off camera fill flash but the bee wasn't disturbed by it.

Yes, risky with a tripod but sure paid off here, i generally go in handheld...& do miss a lot of good moments, also because of manual focus vintage gear....takes a while to get my focus spot on & then my subject moves a few millimeters....ahha....that's nature trying to keep me sharp & about... :)
spring is upon us here, so reckon i should venture out with the tripod when time permits & see where i can take that..many thanks for your advice in there
& once again have to say...that is outstanding !!! best wishes !!
