Hi, I‘m new to photography and since Christmas am the proud owner of a Canon M50. It came shipped with the ef-m 15-45mm lens. I‘m looking into buying a couple more lenses to give me more photography options. I think buying a zoom lens and a macro lens makes most sense, as these are the kind of pictures I‘d like to take, but with my current lens I can‘t. My question is, should I go for the ef-m lenses (the 55mm-200mm f/4.5-6.3 and the 28mm f/3.5 macro) or purchase the mount adapter go for Canon alternatives outside the ef-m range? I‘d love to hear your opinions!
Hello Dave, I would consider using an adapter rather than investing too much into the EF-M line which can only be used on the m series cameras, it is rather small and with the RF line and full frame mirror-less that came out I believe that will be the attention of canon going forward. I think we will still have the EF line and DSLR bodies for a while so the EF adapter seems like a great idea. If you end of with some EF L series glass and get a Canon R someday you can adapt it to that as well.
Thanks for the tip Johnsey. I think that the RF lenses are unfortunately a little out of my price range. There are some EF or EF-S lenses priced similarly to the EF-M range. How do these compare?
They have some similar lenses in the EF mount such as the mentioned 55-200 which should generally have pretty much the same performance. While I do not have first hand experience with many of these lenses some users here do and could give you their impressions. There are some decent performers in that price range to consider and i encourage you to read a few reviews online for each lens before considering purchase to know what to expect from the lens. Your expectations at the 200-300 price point should be that there are things the lens will do well but there will be draw backs as well as they have to sacrifice performance somewhere to produce a lens at that price. I was also not suggesting purchasing RF lenses unless you get the the full frame mirror-less camera as they only work on those bodies, just like your M lenses only would work on your m50. The EF-s should work on your M but not the full frame DSLR line. Bottom line here is the smaller mount lenses can't be adapted to larger mounts. And my suggestion for considering EF lenses is that be more universal on other cameras, and that the m mount I believe are being phased out.
