I escaped my own yard today for an hour and took my camera and a 70-300 lens. I find this right on my limit, weight wise, for hand held shots. I really need to brace against something to get away with it, but no luck today.
These have all been cropped quite a bit, and I may have gone too far and some of their sharpness?

    A little Canon stuff

I think that they look fine.

Just as a suggestion, would the use of a monopod help you out with these sorts of lenses?

    Thanks gents.
One of my tripods converts into a mono, but just like my flash, I generally forget to take it!?
I think it would be a big help with this lens.

Lovely shots - are all at the 300mm end of the FL?

Very nice series. I particularly enjoy viewing bird images, however I lack the patience to capture them. Awesome photographs. :)

    Thanks Tony.
Sorry Ed, missed your question. Yes all up at, or very near 300mm.
