Both yesterday and today have been quite frustrating while shooting in my neighbor's flower garden. The problem is I cannot get an accurate reproduction of the red roses she has. The Roses are not what I would call a true red, as I believe they are closer to a true and deep Maroon or Burgundy. (hmmm, Burgundy.)
What I am ending up with is basically, orange. I used both built-in flash, speedlight, checked the presets and even changed from Landscape Mode to Portrait Mode in the hopes of getting better results and adjusting Hue and Saturation features, but no luck. I even resorted to the Canon EOS 80D Point & Shoot Feature, Scenic Mode and no luck again. I will post an image which I believe turned out rather nice straight out of camera, however it is not the actual color of the Rose. Thanks a million for any helpful hints and suggestions. What first comes to mind is that perhaps Canon is not configured for Maroon or Burgundy, but I knowing Canon, I find that rather difficult if not impossible to believe. Thnx again, Tony IMG_2729 (2).JPG

might sound like a newbie thing to say (but then again i am) have you tried changing the white balance ( the bit where you can change the light temperature?)

Caladina, it is a very good question. However in both the Landscape and Portrait Modes, the Auto White Balance is activated. The more I study this image and others taken on the same day, I am wondering if it is underexposed. I have a call in and an email to Canon and they suggested I clear all the Custom Settings and then restore them. This I did so now I am hoping to be able to get out there today and see what happens. I will be happy to report later. Thnx again for your reply. :) Cheers. Tony

Looking at your posted image Tony, to me it looks under exposed. Are you loosing the colour a little as you push the exposure back to where it needs to be? If you have a bunch of images that look the same, can you have a look at the images exif to see if you have accidentally dialed in a negative exposure compensation. I would also look at cleaning the lens and body contacts.

I would have also suggested white balance.

I would suggest you have a look at two things, one your white balance, instead of using auto, use a grey card and set your camera's white balance in custom.
Next I suggest, see if the colour of the grey card in he image you have taken, matches the the colour of the grey card on your computer screen.
This will ensure your screens colours match the colours in the image from the camera.
All the best with it Tony.

If you haven't got a colour checker do you have any Make-up palettes around the house?

I agree, I believe it is underexposed. The first thing I did was to clean the contacts on the lens and in the camera. I did check the EXIF data as you had suggested and as far as I can tell, it all looked pretty Kosher to me. Thnx, Tony

Do you watch your histogram by any chance?

I have been working with White Balance this evening. In the Menu, I opened up White Balance and highlighted the Custom Icon. Being indoors (because of severe inclement weather) I took photos of some colored fabric my wife has hanging in a closet. I must admit I do like what I see. Unfortunately, there was nothing colored Maroon or Burgundy to shoot at, so tomorrow should be better weather and I will be outdoors and will shoot in each of the White Balance icons and see what happens. Given the same Maroon colored flowers are still there.
I will report on my findings. Again, many thanks to you sir. :) Cheers. Tony

In all seriousness, no. I pay little or no attention to histograms. I suppose now I will have to. I do not have any gray cards and will have to order some Post Haste. Thank you very much. :) TT

Here is another image that is Maroon in color and this is the best I could do in Post Photo Editing. The little leaf on the lower right is actually green and not blue. So it is evident as to what I am dealing with. Thanks for viewing. IMG_2708 (2).JPG

No need to buy anything fancy just something middle gray to meter off and see it it matches what is on your computer screen, my first on was a piece of flat 2mm * 150*150 square board and painted it, I only had to wait for it to dry,

Well, in doing more research, I have discovered that a piece or sheet of white copier paper will work even better than a gray card. The only hitch is that one must be certain that it has not become faded or discolored. Thanks Craig, "Youuuuudaaaaamaaaannnn!! :)) Tony

No, I have not. However, thinking back I recall this issue seems to have been with the camera since day one. I purchased the outfit directly from Canon as they had a special on refurbished products that came with a one year warranty. The warranty on mine is up in August 2020, so will have to wait and see. thnx. Tony

I also have use the same thing, the only thing is remember your camera read it as 18 percent grey and light will shine off of it. the grey meters at the correct amount of light and the light does not shine off of it.
Still a useful white balance tool to use.
    Well done Tony.

Well, unfortunately it appears as though things are getting worse. After making adjustments in Custom White Balance and White Balance,
I took some photos last night at my neighbor's garden. The flower I will post is a day lily and the actual or real color is a sort of white with some gold in the leaves. As you can see, the color reproduced is not even close. I sent another email off to Canon and expressed my concern that perhaps something is amiss with the camera. The odd thing is, I can get excellent reds on subjects that are truly red, but not Maroon or Burgundy and now White and Orange/Gold. Here I have had to resort to using my Pentax gear in order to fully illustrate my dilemma. This is the actual or real color of the Day Lily.
Thanks for viewing. Tony K7_04820 (2).JPG

It might be time to take it back under it's warranty, all the best with it,

try darkening/adjusting the Pentax settings till you get the same colour as the canon one, you might be able to reverse engineer the problem from what you had to do to get the Pentax one same as canon

have you also compared the exit data from early good smudges to the later wrong ones?
