I have an SX610HS and my only issue with the camera is it will not switch to Macro mode. The manual (pg 62) says to push the left arrow/flower button, then use the left-right arrows to switch mode, but when I press the left button/flower it does not do anything. I expected it to work kind of like right button/flash does to change the setting. I tried my wife's camera, also an SX610HS, and hers does not do anything either. Every once in a great while if I am zoomed in far enough it might switch into Macro, then back out, but it won't stay in that mode. WHAT am I missing ?
    Thanks

So when you select it the flower or macro icon does not activate? I assume that means it stays as the hill icon for infinity?
There is a chart on 158 (reference on that macro page that shows the availability in each mode for focus distance. In the telephoto mode the closest distance is 3.3 feet, so it will not let you select the flower. I am guessing you do not have wide angle mode selected, but I honestly do not have this camera. Look also at page 21. I think you will see what I am referring to between those two pages.
