Hi, just wanted to drop by and say hi! I am looking forward to learning about photography. I have a Canon 80d with 18-55mm and 55-250mm lens. I haven't really used it much but would like to learn as much as possible. I typically take pictures on my camera on "auto" setting but now would like to learn how to use all the features to take better pictures.

Wow, this is awesome, I didn't expect replies so fast :) when you say ask away, you mean go to certain threads and ask my question in that specific thread?

I will also be looking for YouTube videos of the Canon 80d

I would suggest going to the beginners question part, and start a new thread there. The question and answers could be helpful to other people.

Welcome Rookie, hope you enjoy the forums! My suggestion is to jump off the deep end and move off auto. TV and Av prioritize automatic settings for shutter or aperture depending on which one you choose. That will allow you to set the other one to what you want and it will pick an appropriate setting to get a decent exposure. I want you to get away from the stigma of auto, control of he shot is important for getting the results you want. The camera is only so smart in many situations, getting off auto and eventually to manual will help you understand what to do get the results you want in your images.

Searching how shutter and aperture affect the image and how they control the amount of light and work in opposition of each other will be the key. The other part of the equation is ISO, or what used to be film speed, that of course can be changed for each shot no instead of per film roll, but i suggest worrying about the iso after you get a feel for the other two.

Thank you for the detailed reply. I am going to spend some time on YouTube to see some videos on shutter/aperture and practice here in the house/backyard before getting into ISO. Also going to look up articles online to get a better understanding of these settings under "manual".
