Can someone help me? Apologies until a few days ago I knew nothing about cameras. I borrowed my partners Canon 60d and have spent the last three days trying to work out why the subject looks so close. At one point I thought I'd fixed it but it has changed again. I am using a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 lens.
So you are using a prime lines with a fixed focal length (you cant zoom this lens any other way than using your feet to get further away). In this case it is 50mm, 50mm is close to what the human eye will see, on a camera like the 60d that framing is slightly cropped further because the crop sensor does not use all the viewable glass of the lens. Those are all the technical details just so you have a bot of an idea what is going on. Now you your concern is that it look soooo close, I assume you are comparing to your camera on your phone most likely, which is probably closer to the equivalent of 25mm which is a wide angle of view. I found this nifty image on google to illustrate how different mm focal ranges will look.
Thank you Johnsey, yes comparing to the phone is exactly what I was doing. I thought the lens was probably the reason. Thank you so much for your help.
If you want a lens that will give you the same field of view as your phone, let us know, and I am sure that we can give you some suggestions. Gary
when you say the image changed in distance while using the same 50mm lens this can happen if you touch the focus ring on the lens while half pressing the shutter button, when you do this some cameras with the right lens can go into manual focus with magnification, its a tool for aiding manual focus. this would explain the image changing size on a non zoom lens i don't know if the 60D has that feature, but its something my M50 can do and its a very useful tool welcome to the forum and photography, ask as many questions as you like just a year ago i was a newbie too
That's good to hear. I haven't taken a lot of pictures for a while as I find this time of the year a little bit "boring". But I it is noticeable that the nights are closing in. Summer is on it's way out. Time to think about dusting off the camera. Gary
there is always something interesting to photograph all year round, even if its a same subject in different season, however the willingness to freeze one tits off in the dead of winter as alot more to do with lack or shutter action, atleast i been kept very busy trying to find holes
