when my mother used to make jam she put a piece of clingfilm over the top with a rubber band and as it cooled it concaved the top.
so the next time she did it i got her to use a piece of shiny plastic,
it worked to a degree, it was not what you would call sharp...........or very useable....it was a very long time ago so it was fun.
best of all i got to eat my telescope..........well the pot of jam

It is funny how when we grow up with very little, we be come more inventive and develop practical manual building skills, when I grew up I was in the same boat but of a weekend, it was billy carts, which we made from timber and pram wheels and large groups of local kids used to gather at the top of a local street which was at the top of a hill and race them all weekend. today you don't see anyone racing any more. The age of electronic playthings has partly changed children's inventiveness.
