RF 24-105 f/4 focus inconsistent

Hello. What I’m about to say here will probably sound a bit vague at times but here goes. I use the R5 and I have three RF lenses: 14-35 f/4; 24-105 f/4; 70-200 f/4. Images used with the 14-35 f/4 and 70-200 f/4 are ALWAYS tack sharp.

However, images using the 24-105 f/4 aren’t always sharp, even when I’m shooting the exact same subject with the exact same camera settings as with the other two lenses. Sometimes 4 frames taken immediately one after the other won’t be sharp. I’m shooting at high shutter speeds so I doubt it’s camera shake or subject movement, especially since I get excellent results using the other two lenses under the same conditions. I will say that when the images are sharp using this 24-105 f/4 lens they tack sharp, but they aren’t always sharp.

Whenever I have camera issues I will immediately think that it’s due to user error (i.e. me), and it usually is. This “some images aren’t sharp” issue I’m having with the 24-105 f/4 is probably also due to something I’m doing but I can’t figure it out. I’ve taken the body and lens to Canon, they tested it, and they said all is good, so it must be my technique. This “non-sharp” issue happens about 3% of the time.

I know this is vague but can anyone out there suggest some tests or steps I might try to figure this out? It’s really bothering me because when I’m shooting an assignment and using this lens I don’t feel confident.

Hello Johnsey, thanks for your reply. Actually, it's probably about 5%-10% inconsistent that I get non-sharp images. I think it has to be either my focus point setting or the subject matter (or both) which at times can be horizontal/vertical lines which Canon has admitted can be challenging for their cameras to focus on. I'll try a few more tests and see if I can figure this out. Will keep you posted. If you have any ideas let me know! Thx -

The EOS R's adapter allows you to use EFS lenses and guess what? They work amazing in 4k because they are designed for cropped sensors so you can put a 10-18mm IS and get the same experience as a full frame 17-25, I typically use the 15-85 efs lens which acts like a 22-92 ish ff lens
