Hi Brand new to the forum and excuse me if this is a newb question. We just bought 2 brand new Canon camcorders to replace our elderly Sony's. My wife shoots live events/weddings etc. We were playing/testing the new camera's and noticed the highlights seem to be blown out in Auto. I shot our family cat inside just laying on the counter iand about 1/2 up her body it goes total white. Again playing around I shot our dogs playing outside in the shade and it seems to have wiped out the HL's in my dog's legs. About 2/3 of the leg, tail etc is all 255's? Our 5D does a great job and we love it we were just a little surprised the how camera is acting. My wife shoots weddings and often shoots on Auto or AV and never had a problem like this before with any of our cameras. Any suggestions/help is appreciated.
I am unfamiliar with these cameras, so just guessing. Have a look at your ISO, it may be turn up high.
I am also unfamiliar with these cameras but would suggest changing the metering mode e.g. centre weighted, average etc, if you have the option. It could just be that the scene you are filming has a greater dark to bright range than the dynamic range of the cameras can cope with.
Thanks for the suggestions. I dont think I have the ability to metering mode. I would have thought on Auto ISO would be adjusted but I could be wrong. I am going to try to shoot some more tomorrow and see what I can come up with. I guestimate its loosing at least 10% in the highlight details. I'll post if I get to the bottom of this. I will say the Zebra pattern shows it not holding the HL's but just think it should be doing a better job or again this could be operator error.
