This is the free software that you can get from canon when you put the serial number in from the body of your camera. I have used this to convert some colour photos to monochrome the problem is the converted has to stay in the software . If i copy and try to paste to my pictures folder a box comes up saying the source and file name destinations are the same. I tried changing the name in the original colour shot in my pictures but it also changes the name of the converted monochrome in the canon software. How can i saved the photo i have converted to monchrome in a new folder in my pictures or am i trying to do something that is not possible.
not sure on that, i use DPP4 just to cull the junk then i send anything i edit to photoshop and then save to a new folder, this leaves the original images as shot in the original destination folder i used to have photoshop 5 on my 2015 mac with el-capitan OS but now i have 2022 mac with photoshop elements because i cant run old photoshop software and i'm not a big user of photoshop volume wise so its not worth me getting the subscription photoshop elements is a one time purchase and does most of what i was doing before i've only ever been a jpeg shooter but PS5 was very good at editing loads still, so far i've been able to find most of it in elements but the layout etc takes a bit of getting used to as i've jumped quite away between the two also will very little useage i've not gotten into alot of editing etc, mostly shoot for the intended final image then its a few tweaks, changing to monochrome in photoshop is very easy as is saving it i did a quick try on the DPP4 and it does as you say, have to wait for a DPP4 editor to answer it or try in youtube, its got an answer for nearly everything
DP4 works similarly to lightroom, they both manage the files and where they are stored. DP4 makes changes to the metadata of teh raw file while Lightroom saves it all in a catalog. Both are considered non-destructive to the original file. So yes you would be making all the changes in the software and you can always revert to the original as shot. This is actually more advantageous as you think as you basically will always have the "negative" as long as you have the raw file. Your workflow should consider the step of "Saving" as a new file in a new location that you do not refer back to and edit. Once your ready to print or upload to the Web you export as a JPG or a Tiff. These can be in your Edits /Gallery Folder structure you can save them in a totally different location or parallel to the raw files. These exports of the edited images will save the changes and be a completely new file. I prefer Lighroom as i think it does a better job separating the file management, editing , and develop /export/ print modules. With either program you can view the jpgs/tiffs etc you export inside the program as part of your library.
This is simple, once you have done the monochrome conversion on the edit page of DPP4 click on "file" at the top left of screen then select "save as" where you can change the folder and/or the filename to save your work without overwriting the original.
following those instructions the file opens in the new folder without the monochrome conversion, this is also the case if you save the file to the Dpp4 when closing via "yes to all", the file will still open in another viewer as the original without edit (monochrome) as mentioned above i'm only in a testing role as i use photoshop so i don't have the issue
Keith, what system are you using to view the images etc, pc/mac any particular viewer or program outside of dpp4?
Yes, your problem here is that you are opening it in another viewer that doesn't interpret the conversion to mono information that DPP4 has added, if you re-open the file in the new location/name with DPP4 then DPP4 will automatically apply the conversion before displaying it. If you want to view it in another viewer then you need to use "convert and save" then you will have the options to change folder and rename the file but you can only save the new file as a JPG or TIF.
yes, i did try the convert and save with a new name etc but it still only showed the as shot when opening it in either photoshop or mac viewer, when i open it in dpp4 it will obviously show it as edited with the option to see it as shot
IDK, It works fine for me, I cloned an image, edited it to B&W quick and saved it as a new JPG on my desktop with a different name.
