The Hardhead Duck (Aythya australis), also known as the white-eyed duck, is the only true diving duck found in Australia. The common name "hardhead" has nothing to do with the density of the bird's skull, but refers to the difficulty encountered by early taxidermists in processing the head.

Hardheads are found in wetter, coastal regions of Australia, particularly in the south-west (where I live) and the south-east. They are seen as far afield as New Guinea, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands.

Nice images Isac and it is good to some some technical data on the birds.

Thanks for that Craig - appreciated. I've just seen a couple of Shovellers at the lake so I hope they can give me some good poses.

Cheers Tony, I thought I'd "duck in" and post some shots while I had a bit of spare time.
