Hello there, I'm new here and looking to pick the collective 'Canon' brain! I mainly shoot landscapes, for which I shoot with Fuji cameras and the 10-24, 35 f2 and 55-200 lenses, I love my Fuji gear - but let's face it, that's not what this forum is for!! I also enjoy shoot wildlife, mainly birds. I did own the Fuji 100-400. It's a good lens, if a bit plasticky for the money. But I found that the AF of my X-T2 just not up to the job. I recently borrowed a Canon EOS 77D with the 'nano usm' ??-135 lens. The focus speed was phenomenal compared to my Fuji. So, can you help? I've been gifted an APSC EOS 7D (Mk 1) from my uncle and now need a birding lens. I have a few options (Focal lengths listed below are 'actual' followed by FF 'equivalent') Budget is <£1000 I'm looking for 2nd hand What I'd prefer...... Zoom preferred (easier to find BIF) Image stabilsed Ideally 400mm (640mm). Maybe 300mm (480mm) Decent build quality Some form of weather sealing would be nice Options 1) Canon 100-400 IS USM II - perfect, ticks all the boxes. But >£1000 2) Canon 100-400 IS USM I - pretty good, not keen on push/pull zoom. How sharp is it? 3) Canon 300mm f4 IS - great but perhaps a bit short? Add the 1.4X? 4) Canon 400mm f5,6. No IS 5) Canon 70-300 IS USM II. Superfast focus. Too short? Won't take 1.4X. Does the Kenko 1.4X work? 6) Tamron / Sigma 150-600???? Opinions please 7) Tamron / Sigma 100 - 400??? Opinions please Appreciate any advice as I'm not a Canon aficionado Thanks Al

Sorry Alan, I don't really know what things go for in your neck of the woods. But, what I would do if I were you, and yes, I am spending your money here and not mine. But I would buy the lens that you want and ticks the boxes. You will keep a lens you like and love for years and years, where as with a body people tend to upgrade them more often. Buying used, I am all for it. Gary
+Welcome Alan, you seem to have a idea of what you want, may I suggest you go to your local camera store and rent the desired lens, for a weekend and try it out. This way you will be comfortable with your purchase or at least try one out at your local camera-store to get a feel for the lens.
Hi all and thanks for the replies. Sorry for my tardiness - I've been rather busy at work (Covid 19) I'm leaning toward the 300m f4 and the 1.4x. Renting one is a good idea
If the 100-400 is out of price range I would go with the 400mm F5.6 then. With birds you will be shooting at higher fps most of the time so IS really isn’t needed.
