Welcome Ian,If you are that new , then you will not know what type of photography appeals to you. There is landscape, Portrait, Street, Low Light to name a few.The next thing to look at is how does aperture, shutter speed and ISO relate to each other and how it affects the previous types of photography mentioned. You are probably thinking what the hell is all this, there is so much to know. The first thing to know is Photography is basically painting with light, your brushes are your lenses, the light is your paint and your canvas is the film or digital sensor in the camera. Right now your best friend is YouTube. May I suggest looking up Fountain of Knowledge. this is who I started looking at and he is easy to under stand and follow..
Type in the subjects I have listed and this will give you an idea of what area you wish to pursue. Then you will know what questions to ask that will help you. You will find a lot of people on this site who are knowledgeable and willing to share that knowledge with you. All the best with you again welcome.

So you can spend time learning the technical aspects of photography to control your shots better, which I fully recommend obviously. And while you shoot you will likely develop your own personal style, as well as preferences of subject.
That aside while your learning all these moving pieces I guess I would have a few simple recommendations: Shoot subjects your find interesting in a variety of ways, not just different angles but different lighting situations as well. This will give you a feel for how composition and lighting play into making an interesting image.
In a classroom setting you would be asked to spend a whole roll of 36 exp film on a subject to force you to look outside the box for different ways to shoot the subject and find a unique way of looking at it.

Just some farther thoughts on what Jonnsey has said, if your photos have not come out the way you want, don't let this get you down, think of them as something to learn from. Put them up on the site and there will be those who will give you advice on how to correct the shot. So stick with it.
