I now have an Ellan iie, a Rebel G, an XT, and an XTi. I got really good deals on them all and am happy with them.

I’m looking into a flash and the Speedlite 430ex II seems to be the best bang for the buck. I researched what would be a good flash for the Ellan ii and came up with the 420ex. The articles I read say the 430ex is an upgrade to the 420. The manual shows the 430ex as an option on the XTi. The 430ex II is an upgrade to that. I can not find anything saying that the 430ex II would not work on the film cameras and would assume, being it’s a twice upgrade of the 420ex, it should work. The 430ex III is nice, and so is the 580, but are about twice the price. Also the 430ex II should work with Transmitter ST-E2.

Does anyone have a wrench to throw into my hypothesis?

The 430exII and other EX flashes are good. I believe you get manual control and menu compatibility with the digital series on the EXII flashes over the original EX series, so I would probably go with those for the price since they have become rather cheap. The 580 is really tempting to me at current prices, but I have a couple of them. I would consider these at some point if you can, they have a fair bit more power than the 430's.

Not all digital cameras are compatible with the older EZ flashes, the ones that were were mid to upper tier DSLRs in the mid 2000's as I understand. But I don't have all the details so someone can fact check me on this.
