I have a Macro EFS 35mm f/2.8 lens. With the hood fitted it takes a 49mm filter and that is fine.

However, the hood has to be removed to use the built in light, and I bought a 27mm filter for that but it does not fit.

What size, make/model filter should I use when the hood is not fitted?

    Many thanks

Lens threading is 49mm across, your 27mm is like half the size of the lens element.

Question what are you using the lens for that your using a filter, what filter are you using? I don't usually use a filter for macro work, but that is highly dependent on location and subject. I do use a lens hood far more often in macro work.

Hello. No, the 49mm filter onlyh fits on the hood, but with the hood removed to use the light, the 49mm filter is far too big.

Found your len's manual, there is a reason it says 49mm on the site. You have a specialty lens with built in lights under the molding, I actually did not realize this even though you mentioned lights in the post. Looks like can states you can not use filters with the hood off.
I'm not sure how far you want to test this, if there is threading inside with the lens hood off does the hood use the threading? If it does does it match normal filter thread specs or is it special to the hood. They may not have advertised the inner threading for a reason, more digging may be necessary.
So you want to use the lights and a filter? If you can sort this out, you find some odd color casting with a macro light an filters as well fringing and maybe issues with reflections. You could get an external ring light and use the lens hood/filter setup. Again I've never tried to use a ring light and filter together the use case has not presented itself. I usually do light tents and something like clamshell for situations where I would want even product lighting, front lights like this can leave some nasty shadows.

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this research. I just wanted to test the lens to see how it performed with the light and different filters. There is a thread inside the lens, but it does not match filter lenses.

As it is not critical, I can probably do without it.

    Many thanks

    Tog :)

Sure thing, I'm glad I was able to find the manual I honestly didn't realize they had a lens with lights built in like a seudo ring light setup. Its an interesting piece of gear. In the end you got the Canon answer why your having trouble.

And I honestly did not want to talk you out of filters, just was trying to understand a bit what they were adding to a shot using the lighting, If you have threading and can measure and figure our the diameter then you could try a filter, I just caution as there may be a reason Canon said it can not be used (thread width would be my guess) .
My other main suggestion was if you would like to use a filter there may be easier ways to light the subject than to use those small LEDs built into the lens.
