So I go to Custom Functions, then Option 12, which is Shutter/AE Lock button, and choose number 0, which says: AF/AE Lock. I close the menu. When I depress the shutter button half way, that will hold the focus of the lens, but it does NOT hold the exposure setting. What am I missing, please? Thanks, ken
Hi Ken, In order to understand your predicament better, please can you tell me what mode you are shooting in and what metering mode you are using for this? G.
Have you changed any other settings in the camera which may have affected this inadvertently? You could always try a factory reset so see if this fixes your issue. G.
Hi Gregory: Thanks so much for your reply! I usually shoot in Program mode, and I use "Center Weighted Average". I have, as part of my troubleshooting, selected option "1" instead of "0", and I have also tried the other two options, and then changed back to "0" with not luck. If nothing rings a bell with you as to what might be causing the problem, I can do the factory reset if necessary.
Well I had a browse through the T7i manual earlier at all the things I thought may have had some use but came up with nothing really as Option 0 looks like what you want. I don't personally have a T7i/800D but I do have an 80D. Let me see if I'm understanding you correctly. Which of the following applies please A: You half press the shutter release button, the focus gets locked but if you move the camera the exposure changes? B: You half press the shutter release button, the focus and exposure are locked but if you move your camera the exposure does not change but you would like it too? For me on my 80D B is correct, however if I want to change the exposure I use the star button (zoom out button) to set/lock my exposure before I get the camera to AF on my subject and then set my composition. I have just noticed however that if I move my camera too quickly before it's finished AFing, the exposure does indeed continue to change and will not lock until I let go of the shutter button and start again. G.
Hi Gregory: The answer is "A". What puzzles me is that I also own a 6D and that functions as expected - half a press on the shutter release freezes everything. I have always bought the Dave Busch manuals for my Nikon cameras, and for both of my Canon cameras. GREAT reference! There is a separate AF button among the circular collection of buttons on the back of the camera with "Set" in the center. In his book, he talks about holding that AF button and then depressing the shutter release half way, and THEN you have 4 seconds before the hold function stops working. But that's for AF and not holding the exposure when you move the camera. That's a kluge. I am used to how the 6D works, and how my Nikons work, and this just seems so strange. WAIT, WAIT. WAIT!!!!!! I just pressed the star button, and it WORKS! Wow! IT HOLDS FOCUS AND EXPOSURE! You are the master of all cameras! Thank you, thank you! You have solved the problem! I will have to go back to the Dave Busch book and look up what the star button does. I can't thank you enough!!! Ken
Wait, I spoke too soon. When I hold the star button, and then push the shutter release, the camera quickly refocuses, BUT the exposure is held, and that is the main think I want. So thanks, Your answer solves my main problem! ken
