I just received a new Canon 50mm 1.8 STM from B&H photo. I have mounted it on my 80D and I can't seem to focus or change any exposure settings. I thought this lens should work with my 80D "out of the box" but perhaps not?
    Any help welcomed.

Welcome to the forum. I can't help you, my 50mm worked right out of the box on my T6s. I'm sure there more knowledgeable folks that can help you.
Simple question, are you sure the lens is fully seated in your camera and is the battery fully charged?
Also, I'd be in touch as soon as possible with B&H to let them know and maybe have a solution for you.

It should yes. Have you mounted another lens on since this has happened?

I would suspect the exposure not changing means you camera does not recognize a lens is mounted. The contacts could be faulty on the lens out of box, that is very very unlikely. You could have dirty contacts on the camera mount, but that would have probably caused issues with other lenses as well.

Thank you both very much. Other lenses worked ok when I mounted them so I mounted the 50mm again and it works fine! It seemed very tight when I mounted it previously and perhaps I didn't have it seated properly. All is well. Thanks again!

Welcome, to the forum, ramonabearo. The 50 F1.8 is one of my favorite prime lenses due to the amount of light it lets onto the sensor and a good walking around lens.

Along the same lines, my 17-85mm lens has just started to trip the Err 01: "communications between camera and lens is faulty - clean contacts and try again". I have done this with two cameras (80D and 1000D) with the same error coming up, so clearly indicating the lens not the camera.
Very meticulous cleaning with iso-propyl (rubbing) alcohol on a tissue on both lens and camera contacts with no success.
It has been a great lens to use despite being quite an old model, yet has stability function. Auto-focusing not affected. Any ideas anyone?

Dave, without seeing the lens, you have two choices. 1 if it is a beloved lens see what the cost is to have it serviced or repaired. 2 look at the cost of a replacement and flog the old one off for parts.
