    Hi
I have purchased the Canon 50 mm RF f1.8 STM lens, and I wonder how I can change aperture even though the lens has a fixed aperture of f1.8.
    Thanks
    Jakob

Welcome Jakob, by the looks of it you have the latest version of Canon's nifty 50, I have the older version and you change the aperture in the camera, There is several very good video clips on you tube about this lens and using it with your camera it would be informative to have a look. any other question, we are here to help.

    HI Jakob,

Your lens has an aperture range from f1.8 to f22, these are changed automatically or manually using the camera depending on the mode you have set.

Your fixed aperture is expected on a fixed length lens. An example on a variable aperture would be when you buy a zoom lens, the cheaper ones usually sacrifice optical performance and build, these end up being plastic and many times the wide aperture is a variable aperture, This means that let say you buy a 70-300 and it says "4 - 5.6" the 4.0 is available at 75mm but as you zoom out you loose the option and only go as wide as 5.6.

    Hi Jakob,

With this R mount lens, you have two choices on how to change the aperture. You can use the control ring that is on the lens or can change the aperture via the camera body.

According to the video clip on you tube, using the control ring to change the aperture is done by setting it up in the customize menu when in video use.
