Recently, I experienced a problem that I had previously seen only on 35mm Film cameras.
An "older" model Sigma lens would not function correctly, once the camera body got beyond a certain model.
e.g. A Sigma DL 28-200 lens worked just fine on an EOS 300 35mm camera, but would not operate properly on a 300V.
Similarly, a Sigma DC 8-16mm lens, released in 2010/2011, worked fine on my EOS 600D. But it occasionally caused my new EOS 80D to "freeze".
    .
    anyone else?
    .
P.S. the Sigma lens worked just fine on my (older) EOS 6D, FF, camera (allowing for the vignetting) :).

It's a common problem with third party lenses but especially it seems with Sigma.
Canon do not release the full details of how their firmware works with their lenses and the only way that the likes of Sigma & Tamron etc can make compatible lenses is to reverse engineer Canon's firmware, but Canon frequently make changes with a new model and whilst it still works for Canon's own lenses it doesn't work for the third party ones and they become incompatible.

This is the main reason I will not buy third party lenses, I have been caught a couple of times before.

    Yes. Indeed, Ray-UK.
Fortunately, my Sigma DG lenses do work fine on my FF EOS 6D, as, of course, do my 'older' Canon EF lenses. My Tamron Di lenses were also OK on the 6D, although I have now sold them (thank you eBay).
As for the newer APS-C EOS 80D, the Sigma DC 8-16 lens was the only 3rd-party 'cropped' lens that I had (fortunately) --> I use my Canon EOS EF (Full-Frame) lenses, with a couple of 'specialist' Canon EF-S lenses, on the 80D.
I hope others read your comment, before 'forking-out' on a new APS-C Canon --> sometimes, I really miss the 600D.

Some years ago after getting a Sigma (for EOS) lens for my 10D and it not working, I did some research and found a site that listed old Sigma (for canon EOS, EF) lenses that would not function on Canon (I don't think they listed particular Canon DSLR models though) plus details of having lenses re-chipped by Sigma.
Unfortunately I have had no luck finding it, I don't know if it's any use for the more modern Canons anyway. Perhaps someone else knows the site?

    Good suggestion, Robert Shears,
I once had an old Sigma DL 70-300 Lens "Re-Chipped" for my "newer" Canon 300V -- it worked
Worth a try for DSLR's, if user has a 'collection' of DG/DC Sigma Lenses, and wants to buy a NEW Canon DSLR.
I repeat, all these lenses worked fine on my 600D --- maybe a boost to the pre-owned camera market?

    It has happened again
A CURRENT-Model "Contemporary" Sigma lens, with Firmware updated, still results in the Canon EOS 80D not operating correctly.
Is Canon trying to do what Apple did 30/40 years ago ---- Make their O/S non-compatible with everyone else?
