    Good evening Ray,

    Very good question :) it's a Micropezidae and the genus is most likely a Grallomyia. The photo was taken in Suriname, SA, in Jagtlust. That is directly South, across the river from Paramaribo. As to it's range? I will let you do the research on that, I believe the info I have provided will allow for that.

    Thank you for your reply, that led me to some very interesting reading.
    Sadly I am unlikely to see one in the UK so it is really nice to see something from another country even though it may be a fairly common sight for you.

    That thing is crazy looking. I am always amazed at the detail people are able to get of insects, nicely done.
