Just bought this and read the manual. I took photos in P, Av and Tv modes and no flash goes off. What am I doing wrong or am I doing anything wrong? What is an "A Camera" and a "B Camera"? Using Canon 20D.

Just guessing here, so P, AV and TV are auto matic modes and the camera posiblely is in auto ISO so if you have enough light hitting the sensor the camera see this and does not activate the flash, go into menu and see what the flash settings are, second go into youtube and have a look at the videos on using flash with your camera. With out the manual in from of me I can't help with the A camera and B camera question. Johnsey may be of help with these questions.

Thing is, this is a film generation flash so some of the tech was built for then. You wont be able to use the Electronic TTL, but as an EX 1st Gen flash it should work on your 20d as a TTL flash, you will have to be sure that FP switch is off/set to normal. I don't thing your flash has any custom functions so I am not sure there is anything to look at as the 20d didn't have flash menus from what I remember.

AF assist beam doesn't work. I reset all custom functions to factory settings. And when I turn camera flash on flash doesn't pop up and flash icon only appears in the viewfinder temporarily. (Camera flash never worked for me.) AF point must be centered for speedlite to work?

As for the pop up flash, there is a button to pop it up next to it. I am not sure where the issues reside, 20d should just work with the EX flash, that 380 flash doesn't have much for custom or manual settings. Are the contacts all clean? Yes you do need to get a focus lock with your for the camera to fire and trigger the flash. I have the old 20d packed away but I cant troubleshoot the 380 as all i have are 580ex2s... Ill take one out when I get a moment and see how it responds on the 20d, as i have only really used them with my newer 5d cameras.
